What is Infertility

Infertility is a disease of the reproductive system that impairs one of the body's most basic functions: the conception of children. According to World Health Organization (WHO) - A couple may be considered infertile if, after two years of regular sexual intercourse, with our contraception, the woman has not become pregnant (and there is no other reason, such as breastfeeding or postpartum amenorrhea).

Infertility in India

Infertility especially in Indian society is a life crisis with invisible losses with many consequences. Motherhood is of great social significance and childless women are subjected to social stigma and isolation. Infertility can affect adversely a woman's identity, status and economic security resulting in anxiety leading to lowered self-esteem. Although attitudes about the roles of women is changing especially in the upper and middle classes, child bearing still remains a very important factor in the socio-economic well-being of most Indian women.

Infertility affects up to 15% of reproductive-aged couples worldwide with approximately 6-8% of couples affected by infertility, in India. Recent findings suggest that infertility varies from region to region, with higher rates of infertility found in southern India. Data analysis from Census indicates that there were about 4% and >6% of the ever married childless women aged 35-39 years, in India, between 1981 and 2001, respectively (corresponding figures for rural - 4% and 6%; urban - 4% and >7%, respectively. The increase in urban India is significantly more at 3.58% when compared to the rural 1.94%.
