Hysteroscopy: an insight into infertility causes

Hysteroscopy is an outpatient/inpatient procedure in which a narrow fiberoptic telescope is inserted into uterus through cervix, to look for and treat abnormalities in the uterus such as polyps, adhesions, fibroids, septum. It may be done in conjunction with laparoscopy.

Hysteroscopy involves viewing the lining of the uterus using a special telescope. Mainly performed to detect the cause of infertility, hysteroscopy is a quick and painless outpatient procedure. We, at Fortis, offer the best hysteroscopy surgery in Bangalore.

How hysteroscopy is performed

The tip of the hysteroscope (a thin, viewing telescope or camera) is inserted into the vagina and gently moved upwards through the cervix into the uterus. Attached to the hysteroscope is a light source and a camera for the doctor to view the endometrium (lining of uterus) on a TV screen. To enable a clear view of the uterus lining, a liquid is discharged through the hysteroscope. Sometimes, anesthesia is administered to help the patient relax during the procedure.

Why undergo hysteroscopy

Hysteroscopy is a non-invasive procedure, mainly used to investigate the causes of infertility. By taking a look at the lining of the uterus, the doctor is able to make sure no complications arise to that may hamper pregnancy or cause a miscarriage.

Hysteroscopy is also performed to:

Usually harmless, hysteroscopy can sometimes cause damage or infection to the uterus or cervix. In extremely rare cases, it can cause a hole in the uterus. When local anesthesia is given, mild cramps may occur. General anesthesia may lead to dry throat, slight hoarseness, or mild sore throat. It is also common to have slight vaginal bleeding for one or two days after the procedure.

With modern medicine making great strides over the past few decades, infertility testing has become much easier today. Hysteroscopy not only helps to identify causes of infertility but also helps to removes uterine fibroids and treat the uterine endometrium through laser, thereby making hysterectomy (removal of uterus) redundant in many cases.
